In a world where obscenity can include anything the government deems unfit, tensions are high for those of an "alternative" lifestyle. 'Last Right' is an engaging new play that brings to life a fictional society that has lost many of its basic freedoms. The play follows a homosexual writer and his loved-ones through the intense days and trials that occur when one is persecuted for fighting a censor.

The play,Last Right, is set in a fictional time of governmentally limited free speech that draws many parallels to our present time. Daily, fears are stoked by “The Republic” of pending terroristic threats to “The Republic.” A bill is pending ratification that would make it illegal to express dissent with “The Republic”, paired with an amendment making it illegal, also, to depict obscene material; particularly that of non-heterosexual non-monogamous couples, tensions are high for those of an “alternative” lifestyle. The action of the play follows a homosexual writer and his loved-ones through the intense days as the pending passage of the two bills approaches and the trials that occur when one is persecuted for fighting a censor. Last Right attempts to answer the question, what are your rights worth? Is it worth dying for? Is it worth fighting for? Invoking many of the same sentiments as other works such as Orwell’s 1984 and Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451, Last Right attempts to explore previously unexplored aspects of this perennial debate.
Whether the audience agrees or disagrees with some of the topics presented in Last Right, the goal is to get them thinking and talking about whether these concepts matter to them. Additionally, Last Right will attempt to show true to life characters, to get beyond stereotypes of sexuality, gender and families. Last Rightwill explore not only the protagonist’s romantic relationship, but also his relationship with his daughter and his friend and coworker.
Last Right is expected to go up for a limited run in April. Stay tuned for further updates.
